Safe with Nothing
There have been many times in my life that I have had serious cause to worry. Every month bills flood my home and paychecks seem to disappear. When every credit card is maxed out, every dollar is spent, every car is breaking down, and I know nothing we own is of any value to anyone else, an image always comes into my mind. I imagine a homeless family I have seen around town: husband, wife, and two little girls. I imagine that is where my family is headed, living off the streets with only as much as the ever dying generosity of others will afford us. It is then that I have to give my worries to God and trust that He will be faithful to provide for our family.
Today I came across a verse in Matthew 5, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, because they will be filled.” It brought to mind another verse I read recently in Romans 1 “The righteous will live by faith.” When I read Scripture, I often try to ask myself, “How would my life look different if I acted like I believed these words the way that I claim to?” If the righteous live by faith that means that they are relying on God every day—every moment!—for everything they need. They live their lives by the faith that it take to extinguish worries. In the past I have thought that I do my best to live by faith when the time calls for it, but surely one day I will have enough money that I will not have to live by as much faith as I do now. Then Jesus says in Matthew that the righteous WANT to live by faith; they crave it! That means the most secure way to live my life is in the will of God relying on Him for everything.
God, please help me to change my life to match my beliefs. Help me to want to live by faith and trust you for my needs. Help me to know that I am safe when I am following Your guidance because You will not lead me astray and You will always provide all of my needs.
